William Gray Reid and wife Sarah E. Woolford

William Gray Reid (b. 10 Apr 1819, d. 10 Sep 1884) may have been working as a carpenter, in Augusta Co., VA in 1850. At the time, a William Reid was living with a Benjamin Reid family in Augusta Co. Benjamin, who was also a carpenter, may have been William Gray’s uncle. By 1853, William Gray had married Sarah Elizabeth Woolford and was living in the Staunton area of Augusta Co. By 1860, William had moved his then family of four to McGaheysville.

William Gray participated in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy in Company B of the 58th Virginia Militia, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He survived the war by almost 20 years, dying on 10 Sep 1884. William Gray is buried near his wife and mother in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
